Friday 10th January 2020

Good Afternoon,

I would like to wish our whole community a happy and successful New Year. In assembly this week we have been looking at what the future holds and the role that young people will play in making it become a reality.

Yr 11 Mock exams start next week, further details are below.

Yr 9 Parent evening

We had a well attended Year 9 parents evening with many conversations beginning to consider options and next steps for our ambitious Year 9s. Mr Eddie will be sharing more details about the options process in the coming weeks. We are also aware that some parents were unable to book all of the appointments they wanted to and Mrs Cunio will be contacting parents with further details about how to get progress information in addition to student reports in due course.

Charity Events

The total raised on Christmas jumper day was £315 which will be donated to Save the Children.

Our next charity event is being held on 22nd January in support of The Basing Unit, it will be a “walking” football match to support the wonderful work of this unit which supports patients during and after cancer treatments.

Please have a lovely weekend.

Mrs Pearce

Peace Garden Project Appeal

In order to progress with the peace garden project we could really do with  some expert knowledge on the best way to deal with large roots from the surrounding trees and advice on the best surfaces to create a usable, easy to maintain area.  If you are a gardening guru and could spare a small amount of time to offer advice please contact Sharon Edwards or email There is absolutely no expectation to get involved, we are looking for advice only at this stage. Thank you

BikeAbility Level 3

As mentioned previously we are investigating the feasibility of running BikeAbility Level 3 for years 7, 8 & 9 subject to demand.  In order to take part, students must have passed their Level 2 course (normally held at primary school). Participants are confronted with a variety of traffic conditions as they learn the skills that will allow them to cycle from home to school safely. The course is 3 hours long and involves some theory or route planning, followed by practical cycling over busy roads, roundabouts, complex junctions etc.  Further information can be found here.  If you would like to register your interest please email Sharon Edwards with your child’s name, tutor group, with the subject heading BikeAbility by 24th January so that a decision can be made.

School Calendar information can be found at the end of this eNews and please open the link for  "Dates to Remember" for 2019/20.

Year 10 Work Experience (working with EBP South)

Monday 13th July – Friday 17th July 2020

Thank you to the many students and parents who have completed and submitted their Work Experience Forms. These are now being processed.

What does my son daughter need to do?

From next week students will be given a username and password to access the EBP Work Experience Website to either check progress of an application or submit a request.

What if I have submitted a form to school?

This form has been scanned and passed to EBP South. They check availability.

  1. Check if their placement is confirmed. Please be aware not all placements are guaranteed
  2. Apply for 1 to 4 placements

What if I have not found a placement?

Students will need to:

  1. Login and search for placements
  2. Once a placement has been found click apply. Up to 4 placements can be chosen and ranked.

There are plenty of placements still available but it is on a first come first served basis. From the end of next week all students should be able to access the website.

Year 11 - Mr Peebles

Starting next week we begin our two week run of Mock examinations for option subjects in year 11.  Students should already be revising.  The timetable is produced below.

Mrs Gibson’s top tips for GCSE Success: Tip 8

Working Environment

Students will spend time revising at school, in lessons and in Aiming higher, but often the biggest impact can be made in their independent study time.

Ideally when they are revising or studying at home, they need a permanent, quiet, well lit place, where they will have very few interruptions or distractions.

The best set up is probably a flat surface like a desk or table in their bedroom. More communal areas are likely to have more distractions.

Removing distractions such as phones or games consoles while revising can also increase focus and reduce procrastination.

With the mock exams starting next week, now is the ideal time to ensure students are set up and well practiced by the time the GCSEs start.

Good luck Year 11!
