Friday 13th March 2020

Good Afternoon,

In view of the changing circumstances surrounding Coronavirus I have issued a statement confirming how we, as a school community, are taking  all the necessary precautions and keeping up to date with the daily guidance issued by Department for Education.  The statement can be found on our website here

We have after careful consideration made the decision to postpone any parental meetings face to face, as a precaution for all involved, including the year 9 options interviews. We will investigate whether the year 9 options interviews can be rearranged or whether the process can be completed electronically. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

Ski trip - Statement from PGL Travel issued on 13/3/20

“You will no doubt have heard the government advice issued last night which is that all overseas school trips should not go ahead. This advice is open-ended in terms of date of travel, but we expect your trip at the beginning of April is unlikely to go ahead.”

Given the announcement was only made last night, we are seeking help and guidance from the Government and ABTA on how to deal with refunds so that we can follow their guidelines. We are sorry we aren’t able to give more clarity on this immediately, but these circumstances are unprecedented and we ask you to bear with us whilst we assess the situation.”

There will be a further update on this before the end of term.

Please do keep well and enjoy the weekend

Mrs Pearce

Dates to Remember 2019/20

Houses of Parliament Trip - Mrs Holmes

Students in year 9 were lucky enough to visit the Houses of Parliament. They toured the whole Palace of Westminster, learning about the development of our representational democracy. They saw inside the debating chambers of both the Commons and the Lords, but were sadly ushered out of the Commons just before the Prime Minister and the Chancellor arrived to deliver the Budget. Afterwards they had the chance to visit Downing Street and Whitehall, as well as watching various protests in action outside Parliament. A fascinating day, and well worth the very early morning start.

Year Group News

Year 7 - Mr Morey

As part of their information literacy lessons with Mrs Holmes, year 7 recently undertook individual research projects on pioneering scientists and engineers. Using their developing skills in identifying sources of reliable information they created some impressive work on subjects as diverse as Isaac Newton, Henry Ford, Yuri Gagarin and Prof Brian Cox. Well done to Nubia, Jasmine  D, Gracie F, Poppy, Kathrin, Leah, Gracie S, Emelia, Ian, Alicia, Chloe P, Alfie R, Marnie, Rose M, and Thomas M      whose impressive work has won them a trip to the Winchester Science Centre.

Year 8 - Mr Duffy

This week's assembly focused on Respect and Equality. We also considered International Women's day and how the rights of Women have changed over time, as well as linking to our Vyne Values.

I am also proud of the Year 8 students who took part in the County Cross Country on Tuesday, Mr Gibson was very proud of them and how well they performed against an incredibly strong field.

Year 9 - Ms Cunio

As mentioned above, the year 9 option interviews have been postponed.

The 44 year nine students who went to the House of Commons this week, really enjoyed it. Whilst I was disappointed that I wasn’t able to go myself, I was glad not to have had to make the very early start! They all behaved exceptionally well, giving a good impression of the school to the country's leaders, for which I commend them.

Year 10 - Ms Guzzi

The year 10s have had an assembly this week regarding the Prefect application process. Students who are eligible will have below 40 behaviour points and a reasonably good attendance, the list will go out to tutors on Monday. If students want to apply they will need to write a letter of application to Mrs Pearce and will go through a rigorous interview process. Prefects will be expected to carry out duties and will have lots of responsibilities. In addition to this they will have access to a Prefect lounge and Prefect only trips. I look forward to seeing lots of applications come flooding in between now and the deadline, which is the 30th of March.

Year 11 - Mr Peebles

Mock exams continue next week - see timetable below.

All year 11 students will have now received their individual GCSE examination timetable.  The full exam timetable is available on the school website along with a host of information to aid their GCSE exam preparation.  This includes a full list of revision guides, what equipment to bring to the exam and the code of conduct.

The information can be found on the website under Information; GCSE Information.  Click here

Mrs Gibson’s top tips for GCSE Success: Tip 16

Be prepared for anything

If current media tells us anything, it's that you can't predict what is coming! With this in mind, being as prepared as possible will reduce any anxiety and stress over the coming months. This can be from ensuring students already have their clear (transparent) pencil cases filled with black biros or ball point pens, pencils rulers (the full list can be found under Information, GCSE Information on the school website) to making sure all passwords and logins are to hand if for any reason a student needs to work from home. Injuries and illness are an inevitable part of life, so making sure they don't affect the access to work if needing to set it online is a must. Check your student knows all of their logins for Epraise, Seneca, the school VLE and any other online learning platforms. Not only will it allow them to revise wherever they are, it will also mean they can be set work when and if needed.
